Saturday December 27 – Sunday December 28
On Sat, I left Nelson to go to the north, to the Golden Bay and the northern part of the Abel Tasman National Park. Highway 60 is the only road to the top of the south island, so when I go back I have to take the same steep and winding road. But since the region is beautiful, that does not matter.
At noon I was at Takaka Hill. There, I did the difficult roundtrack to the summit. It wasn't ideal to wear shorts, since some parts of the track were overgrown with bushes. My day ended at the crowded Top 10 Holiday Park in Pohara, where I got a tent site immediately next to the toilets.
The next day, I went to the Abel Tasman National Park. I took the unsealed road to Awarea Bay and walked the last part because a Frenchman was blocking the road. His car got stuck in a ford. After some sightseeing, I went back to Pohara and had a coffee on The Pirate Ship, an old ship in the harbour. It's definitely the best located cafe till now.
Then, I drove up all the way to the most northern point of the island, Farewell Spit. There, I walked along the beach for about 2 hours. I camped at Pakawau, where I met a New Zealand family who invited me for a barbecue. In the evening, we had a nice fire at the beach under the stars.
De Golden Bay

Zaterdag verliet ik Nelson om naar het noorden te gaan, naar de Golden Bay en het noordelijke deel van het Abel Tasman National Park. Highway 60 is de enige weg naar de bovenste punt van het Zuider Eiland, dus als ik terug ga moet ik dezelfde steile en bochtige weg nemen. Maar omdat de omgeving prachtig is maakt dat niet uit.
Rond het middaguur was ik in Takaka Hill. Daar deed ik de moeilijke rondwandeling naar de top. Het was niet ideaal dat ik een korte broek aan had, omdat sommige delen van het pad met struiken overgroeid waren. M"n dag eindigde in het volle Top 10 Holiday Parin Pohara, waar ik een plek voor m"n tent kreeg direct naast de toiletten.
De volgende dag ging ik naar het Abel Tasman National Park. Ik nam de onverharde weg naar Awarea Bay en liep het laatste stuk omdat een Fransman de weg blokkeerde. Zijn auto was vastgeraakt in een doorwaadbare plaats. Na wat rondgekeken te hebben ging ik terug naar Pohara en dronk koffie op The Pirate Ship, een oud schip in de haven. Het is absoluut de plek met de beste koffie tot nu toe.
Daarna reed ik door tot het meest noordelijke punt van het eiland, Farewall Spit. Daar heb ik ongeveer 2 uur langs het strand gelopen. Ik kampeerde in Pakawau waar ik een Nieuw Zeelandse familie ontmoette die me uitnodigde voor een barbecue. "s Avonds hadden we een mooi vuur op het strand onder de sterren.
